Law Student Scholarship Recipients


 
José Bercerra
José was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2016 where he majored in Government with a Business Certificate. After college, he joined Teach For America and taught high school math in the Rio Grande Valley and Austin. He graduated cum laude from Texas A&M University School of Law in May 2024 where he participated in the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, was President of the Tax Law Society, Vice-President of the Latinx Law Student Association, and Parliamentarian for the Student Bar Association. He will be joining Vinson and Elkins' Dallas office in the fall.

 
Kathryn Hamilton
Kathryn Hamilton graduated cum laude from South Texas College of Law Houston in May of 2024. During law school, Kathryn was an intern at KPMG and clerked for the Honorable Donna Roth of the Harris County 295th District Court. Additionally, Kathryn enrolled in several tax courses, including Federal Income Taxation, Corporate Taxation, Partnership & Subchapter S Taxation, and U.S. Taxation of International Transactions. She also served the community as a student attorney in the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, through which she represented low-income individuals in controversies with the IRS. Prior to law school, Kathryn obtained her BA in English and Political Science at Texas Christian University. She will continue her education in tax law this fall through New York University School of Law's Graduate Tax Program to pursue an LLM. Kathryn looks forward to returning to Texas to practice tax law after graduating.

  Joe Rubel
Joe Rubel graduated summa cum laude from South Texas College of Law Houston in May 2024. During law school, Joe was a student intern for the South Texas College of Law Low Income Taxpayer Clinic from 2022-2023, and he interned for the state and local tax division at BDO, L.P., where he will begin his legal career this fall. He also served as Vice President of the STCL Tax Law Society and during his 2L year he was a part of the Langdell Program for Federal Income Tax, which provides instructions and tutoring for incoming law students. Before law school, Joe earned his B.A. in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin.
 

 
Sarah Zepeda
Sarah Zepeda graduated from South Texas College of Law Houston in May 2024. During law school, Sarah contributed to the student body in several ways, including serving as Vice President of the Student Bar Association and Secretary of the Tax Law Society. She also externed with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel in Houston, volunteered with the school’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, and completed a research paper on tax credits for clean vehicles pursuant to the Inflation Reduction Act under the supervision of Professor Bruce McGovern. After sitting for the Bar Exam in July, Sarah is heading to Washington D.C. to attend Georgetown Law for her taxation LL.M.
